Originally from Sydney's Northern Beaches, Stephen Skinner creates abstract works that reflect a profound connection to nature and place, particularly the landscapes of Byron Shire. With surf trips to the region forming a core part of his childhood memories, Byron has long been more than a destination: it's a source of creative grounding that continues to shape his artistic journey.
Stephen is a self-taught artist whose practice is defined by an intuitive use of colour, layered textures, and expressive contrast. Drawing inspiration from the raw beauty of the natural world, his work explores emotional depth through abstract forms.
"The colours and textures of nature are what inspire my layers and contrasts. I create art to express emotions that are often hard to put into words: vulnerability, awe, and quiet strength."
Each piece invites viewers into a moment of connection, whether to a memory, an emotion, or a part of themselves they may not have fully acknowledged. "I hope it makes space for people to pause and connect, either with themselves or with the world around them."
After a decade living and travelling across Europe, Stephen returned to Australia, where he now lives with his wife and two young children. Balancing family life with a deepening commitment to his art practice, he continues to refine his voice and expand his body of work.
